Friday the. Thirteenth

Friday, the 13th.

Hope that doesn't mean anything.

Pouring rain when we left the lodge.  On our way south to Invercargill the last big place  on the tip of the island.  We drove along the long lake, Wakatipu.  There are many mountains on both sides.   They are not individually named.  On the map it says The Remarkables.  Stunning scenery again.  At the bottom of the lake, is a place called Kingston where they have an old historical steam train not in use.  What a shame.  We saw all the cars and the 2 locomotives.  They are going to just rust away, unfortunately.

Sheep, sheep and more sheep. Most of the land here is taken up by sheep and cattle stations.  They do have deer farms too.  Of, they are not native.  They are kept  purely for their meat.  A fellow who was cooking In the communal kitchen last night said that Kiwis love venison.

Larry here.  We arrived in Invercargill and the gal at the motel, sent us to see the hardware store.  E Hayes and sons Hardware.  You wouldn't believe it, it's been around for 100 years.  It occupies a whole city block with everything one could imagine including a large collection of vintage motorcycles, one which is powered by an air cooled Corvair engine.  All sorts of vintage cars and tools, plus every tool one would want to buy including a pipe wrench that must weigh fifty pounds.  Camping equipment, dishes, crystal you name it they have it.  We'll go back tomorrow and take pics.  Not sure how much money they make, almost everyone in there today were tourists.  The land is quite flat here, the first we've seen.  Cool this aft, had to wear my black jeans for the first time after dragging them around for eight and a half weeks.  L
