Arrival in the South Island

Arrival in the South Island

Larry found 2 kids who were hitch-hiking the South Island and told them if we could fit all our luggage in and them, they were welcome to come with us from Picton to Blenheim.  Tina, was from Germany and was planning on touring for as long as she could.  She has been to Thailand, Korea and who knows where else.  She was a lovely young lady and had hooked up with Caleb on the ferry.  Caleb was a talkaholic.  Imagine what that was like with 2 of them in the car and one of them wasn't Tina.  Anyways, he was  from the North Island.  They were probably  in mid-twenties.  She had tattoes on her body and African big rings in her ear.  We have seen a lot of tattooed  people here.  Maybe I'll get one myself.  Anyways, on the drive, which was very short, Caleb proceeded to tell us that he had been a bad cat and did drugs, but now was saved and had been drug-free for 1 year and was very proud of himself.  He was waiting to be sentenced for something. They were very sweet and helped get all our luggage in and them, etc.

Must admit the young kids and some of the natives wear a lot of tattoes.  It is their choice but it is so permanent.  When I look at them, all I see are these things and it is hard to see the person underneath.  The hairstyles are weird too.  Shaved  and or with long pieces of hair falling down.  But the friendliness and helpfulness here is bar-none.  Picked our fourth and last car, a Kia Rondo, fairly large for a compact, as Beth mentioned we four people and a ton of luggage.  We saved the best for last, it even has cruise control. I'm getting quite used to driving on the other side of the road, even have my right arm out the window.  When we picked it up it's extra for a second driver but the guy beside me got for free because Hertz did it on the North Island, so I got the same treatment.  Beth is going swimming with Flipper or his relatives tomorrow. Dinner tonight is chicken stew, we finally got a discount card at New World, our favourite NZ supermarket.   Sitting on our balcony, the sun is over the yard arm.   L
